VIC: Unions seek coverage for Vic workers

Victorian workers not covered by federal awards could get a 250 per cent loading
increase if unions are successful tomorrow in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission.

Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary LEIGH HUBBARD wants the commission to place
all Victorian workers on federal awards.

He says there's a bloc of about 100,000 Victorian workers in 16 industry sectors with
no award protection.

Mr HUBBARD says unions want the commission to give them coverage so they can get the
same shift penalty payments as their colleagues.

He says a waiter paid under a federal award received around $28.10 per hour on public
holidays while those on industry agreements received $11.24 an hour.

He says those standing to gain include retail and hospitality workers, service station
attendants, tow truck drivers, call centre operators, private hospital and other healthcare
workers.
