ALBANY IN LINE FOR $250,000 GRANT.(CAPITAL REGION)

ALBANY The city is in line for a nearly quarter-million grant to underwrite a groundbreaking methane extraction program at its landfill.

The $243,892 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority would fund a plan to lay pipes under the landfill and pull out the explosive gas, closely monitoring the effects in an effort to design a state-of-the-art method for mining it, according to a city consultant.

Methane is produced by the bacteria as they eat up the trash buried in a landfill.
