Fed: Anderson defends moves to planting GM canola

The federal government has defended moves to allow farmers to plant their first GMfood crop within weeks.

This follows the gene technology regulator's release of risk management strategies for the crop.

Federal National Party Leader JOHN ANDERSON says he feels quite strongly on the issuebecause he's among those who've pushed hardest for the office of the gene technology regulator.

Mr ANDERSON'S expressed confidence in the regulator who says she can't find any evidencethat GM canola poses health or environmental risks.

Federal Labor says the government's still more than a year away from receiving a reporton how to segregate GM crops from non-GM crops.

And the Australian Democrats say they're staggered Dr MEEK has failed to find any riskfrom the GM canola or impose any restrictions on its planting.
