Mini DV to S-VHS and vice-versa: JVC's Dual-Format Mini DV/S-VHS recorder and editor.

Here at Camcorder & Computer-Video, we've been promoting the virtues of nonlinear editing for some time now. It IS the de facto standard for editing your home videos today. But, we also realize that many of you may be put off by the prospect of using a potentially difficult-to-use computer to edit your family videos. You might be hoping for a more direct solution, one that doesn't involve capturing video to your computer first and learning a computer-editing program.

Well, your wishes might have just come true, especially if you are shooting with a Mini DV camcorder. JVC's new SR-VS30U Dual-Format Recorder/Editor combines record, playback, and editing features for both Mini DV and S-VHS/VHS tape formats in a single VCR-friendly unit.

More Than A VCR

The JVC SR-VS30U ($1,395 MSRP) is elegantly housed in a titanium/gray-colored chassis that's a bit larger than a standard videocassette recorder--about 17.25-in. W x 4.25-in. H x 15-in. D. It's larger than a typical VHS recorder, because it contains two player/recorder transports, one for the Mini DV tape format, and the other for the S-VHS/VHS tape format.
