Iran hangs murderer

TEHRAN, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Wednesday hanged a man inpublic in Tehran who had stabbed a love rival to death, local mediareported.

Yaqub-Ali Jafari, nicknamed Mehdi, murdered Mohammad Reza withknife strokes some two months ago and was hanged at 6:30 a.m. localtime (GMT 0330), said the state IRIB TV website.

The murderer was hanged in front of a crowd in northern Tehran atthe site where he committed murder in October.

The murder in daylight and in the presence of scared people, ashort video of which was circulated on the Internet shortly afterthe incident, caused anger in the public opinion and grabbed theofficials' attention to pursue the case urgently.

Murder is among some other crimes, including drug trafficking,adultery, rape and armed robbery, which could be punished by deathin Iran.
