Fed: Telstra sale upset in coalition ranks

A Liberal backbencher has accused his colleagues of a campaign of intimidation becausehe's expressing concern about the full privatisation of Telstra.

ALBY SCHULTZ says he's been shunned by colleagues over Telstra and has also accusedunnamed government ministers of arrogance.

Mr SCHULTZ has threatened to abstain from voting with the coalition on the full privatisationof the 50.1 per cent government-owned telco should his constituents oppose it.

The privatisation bill will be debated in the House of Representatives today.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD's told Sky News he understands Mr SCHULTZ's concerns.

But Mr HOWARD says he believes services are now mostly up to scratch in the bush andthere's strong support for a further sale.

Opposition communications spokesman LINDSAY TANNER says Mr HOWARD is out of touch withthe two thirds of Australians who are opposed to the privatisation of Telstra.
